  • Experience Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius in one trip
  • Learn about the town’s history from an expert guide
  • Climb to the crater of the volcano for spectacular views

The destroyer and the destroyed – visit this perfectly preserved Roman town and the smouldering volcano that buried it in ash thousands of years ago.

Our full-day excursion takes you first to Pompeii, around 45 minutes from Sorrento. On arrival at the site, you’ll be handed a headset and your local guide will lead you in the footsteps of the Pompeians, through its villas, forums and baths, hidden under ash since 79AD.

After your tour, you’ll stop for lunch (payable locally) and travel onto the imposing Mount Vesuvius, mainland Europe’s only active volcano. You’ll climb to around 1,000 metres by coach, before disembarking for the final climb up to the crater itself. When the weather’s clear, the views across the Bay of Naples are spectacular. Once you’ve filled up your camera’s memory card, you’ll board the coach for the return journey to Sorrento.

During low season, warm clothing may be required for Vesuvius. Closed shoes or trainers are recommended.

We say: “This is a great way to see two of the area’s biggest attractions in one tour. Since the excursion is a whole day, there’s plenty of time to see everything (and at Pompeii, there’s a lot to see!) and really make the most of the experience.” Anna Vickers, Content Editor
