  • Visit Herculaneum and the volcano that buried it in 79AD
  • Guided tour of Herculaneum’s villas and Roman baths
  • Walk up to the summit of Mount Vesuvius

Combine our half-day Herculaneum excursion with a visit to Mount Vesuvius. You’ll start at Herculaneum, a wealthy summer resort that was buried in lava in the same 79AD eruption that destroyed Pompeii. Unlike Pompeii, Herculaneum remains remarkably well-preserved, with original timbers, mosaic floors and pottery from more than 2,000 years ago still on display in the villas. You’ll view the town from above, before working your way down with a guide who’ll explain the history behind what you’re seeing.

After you’ve finished up at Herculaneum, it’s time for lunch (payable locally), before we press on to Vesuvius. A coach will take you up to a height of 1,000 metres, where you’ll be able to enjoy fantastic views across the Bay of Naples. If you fancy it, you can continue walking right up to the summit, where you can peer inside the volcano’s vast crater.

We recommend wearing closed shoes or trainers for this excursion, plus warm clothing outside the summer months (it can get chilly up on the summit).

We say: “Herculaneum is not as well-known as Pompeii, but I actually prefer it as it’s even better preserved. Visiting Mount Vesuvius afterwards is great, too – I’d definitely recommend walking the extra bit up to the summit if you’re able to.” Laura Mason, Product Manager
