There’s so much to do on this glamorous island, a day may not seem like enough. A highlight is visiting the Blue Grotto, a series of caves which are navigated by a small row boat where the waters are illuminated a brilliant blue. The busy Capri Town is an ideal place to stop for lunch and a spot of shopping, where handmade goods can be purchased including the island’s famous sandals that are made to order. Higher on the cliffs, the town of Anacapri has great views over the sea – to get there, take a taxi (often open-top) or the local bus (a small minibus that gets quite crowded in the summer) and enjoy the unique journey up the steep winding roads of the cliff. For some of the most panoramic views on the island, the museum of Villa San Michele is a must, or you can head straight for the chair lift which will take you to the summit of Monte Solaro. It’s the highest point on the island and the 12-minute ride takes you over local gardens with sea views along the way. There’s a lovely restaurant at the top where a glass of wine can be enjoyed before your descent.
