This 15-night island-hopping itinerary was designed by Italy Expert Amanda Curry.

“This itinerary is something I’ve always wanted to do myself – island-hopping between the beautiful islands of Sicily, Vulcano, Lipari, Sardinia and Elba. It’s a really unique itinerary, and allows you to experience some of Italy’s lesser-known places as well as its popular ones.” Amanda

After flying into Catania, you’ll have a private transfer to whisk you straight to your first stop, the clifftop town of Taormina. Once you’re all checked in to your chosen hotel, make a beeline for the Piazza IX Aprile, where you’ll find fantastic views over the bay to Mount Etna.

Day 2 – 3: Taormina

Points of Interest

You’ll have two full days in Taormina, so there’s plenty of time to explore. A must-see is the ancient Greco-Roman amphitheatre. Built in the third century BC, its stage is still in action today, hosting opera performances, music concerts and movie screenings during Taormina’s annual film festival. A trip up the slopes of Mount Etna also comes highly recommended – the views from the summit are incredible.

Day 4: Taormina – Lipari

Points of Interest

A private car will take you to the port today, where you’ll catch the ferry from Sicily to Lipari, part of the volcanic Aeolian archipelago. The island’s eponymous main town can easily be explored in an afternoon; after a visit to the castle and archaeological museum, have a leisurely wander around the narrow streets before settling at a harbour-side café for a couple of drinks.

Day 5: Lipari

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Points of Interest

Spend the day exploring more of Lipari (perhaps heading to one of its beautiful beaches), or book a boat trip to explore a few of the other Aeolian Islands. For a great view of Stromboli’s lava display, opt for one which takes you past the island in the evening.

Day 6: Lipari – Vulcano

Overnight Accommodation

Map of Day 6: Lipari – Vulcano

It’s on to Vulcano today, another island in the Aeolian chain – your ferry can be organised and paid for locally (ask your Citalia concierge if you need any help), so you can choose to depart as early or as late as you wish. Your base on Vulcano will be Therasia Resort Sea & Spa, a fantastic spa hotel with knockout views of the islands from the infinity pool. Get settled in, then relax down by the pool. Stay put for dinner too; try L’Arcipelago for Sicilian dishes and sunset views.

Day 7: Vulcano

Overnight Accommodation

Points of Interest

The island is named after the smoking Fossa di Vulcano, which you can climb if you’re feeling energetic. You could also head to one of the island’s hot springs or mineral-rich mud baths for an all-natural spa session.

Day 8: Vulcano – South Sardinia

Travel back to Sicily today to catch a short flight from Trapani to your next island, Sardinia. You’ll start off in the island’s stunning south, where you’ll have two full days to discover its white-sand beaches and historic towns.

Day 9 – 10: South Sardinia

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

If you’re beach-bound, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Chia, Santa Margherita di Pula, Villasimius – pretty much everywhere in this region has a collection of beautiful beaches to its name (Spiaggia di Porto Giunco, near Villasimius, is a particular favourite with our Sardinia concierge). For a bit of history, you could head into Sardinia’s capital, Cagliari, or tour the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Nora.

Day 11: South Sardinia – North Sardinia

Points of Interest

As well as spending some time on the beaches up here, take a boat trip to the stunning Maddalena Archipelago. These small but beautiful islands are edged with untouched coves and secret beaches reachable only by boat. To get a feel for Sardinia’s Catalan influence, take a trip into historic Alghero; to see its glamorous side, head east to chic Porto Cervo.

Day 14: North Sardinia – Elba

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Points of Interest

The final stop on your island-hopping adventure will be little-known Elba Island, home to a rugged coastline, white-sand beaches and forest-cloaked mountains. You’ll take a ferry from Sardinia to the mainland, and from there it’s another hour’s ferry ride to Elba.

Day 15: Elba – UK

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Points of Interest

Map of Day 15: Elba – UK

You’ve got a full day to explore Elba’s quaint towns and tucked-away beaches.

“When I visited Elba, I enjoyed spending a day driving around the island, stopping at little towns like Poggio, Procchio and Marina Marciana along the way. The colour of the water looking down from the cliffs above was beautiful.” Amanda
