Enna is an impregnable fortress town which holds the crown for being Sicily’s highest (over 900 metres) provincial capital, and therefore offers countless vistas across the fertile landscape. Many of Enna’s main attractions are grouped together in the old town, spread between the ancient streets that connect to the Via Roma. The Piazza Crispi has spectacular views of Calascibetta, a quiet town sitting at a lower altitude in the distance; a walk to the south-east end of Enna will enable you to view another picturesque commune of Vizzini. The unquestionable focal point, however, is the huge landmark of Castello di Lombardia – a 13th century castle, famous for its outstanding panoramas of Etna and the majority of Sicily’s mountain peaks.
