After arriving in Rome and checking-in to your hotel, head into the historic streets to get a grip of city life, seeking out the San Crispino Gelateria near the Trevi Fountain to enjoy what is often considered the best gelato in Rome. Afterwards, stroll through to the Spanish Steps and soak up the energetic atmosphere of one of Rome’s most famous sights.
Today, we recommend visiting the world’s smallest country – Vatican City. Pre-book a tour and discover centre of the Roman Catholic Church. Wander through St. Peter's Basilica, study the ornate tapestries and geographical maps housed by the Vatican Museums, and admire Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Afterwards, head back across the river to Piazza Navona for a great choice of restaurants for your evening meal.
Your third day in Rome can be spent visiting two of the city’s most famous sights, starting with the epic Roman Colosseum – the largest amphitheatre ever built, and home to thousands of ancient Roman gladiator battles. Next up is the Roman Forum – an archaeological site containing dozens of remarkable buildings for you to explore. Finish with a trip up Palatine Hill for glorious views over the ruins.
Today you leave the Eternal City for Sorrento – a breathtaking jumble of pastel-shaded buildings flowing down the hillside to the sea. From Roma Termini (Rome's main station), take the train out of the city to Naples (approx. 2 hours), before catching your private transfer to the bustling town of Sorrento (approx. 1 hour). Check in to your chosen hotel, take a stroll to the Villa Communale public gardens and watch the spectacular sunset over the bay of Naples on your first evening in Sorrento. Afterwards, head to Piazza Tasso for an atmospheric dinner.
Today, we recommend visiting one of Italy’s most poignant and impressive attractions – Pompeii. Destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, Pompeii lay buried below ash and lava for hundreds of years before its discovery in 1784, and has now been largely excavated to reveal a haunting look at life before the lava came. Pre-book the Pompeii and Vesuvius excursion and uncover the history of the ancient town, before getting up close and personal with the Mount Vesuvius, combining spectacular views with awe-inspiring scenery.
After a sumptuous Italian breakfast, walk down to the Marina Grande, a quaint fishing harbour which was the once original port of Sorrento, and watch the local fishermen heading out to sea before you sample some of the region’s finest fish dishes for lunch. Spend the next few days exploring the breathtaking Amalfi Coast, visiting towns like Positano, Maiori or lofty Ravello. Hop aboard a ferry and travel across to the volcanic isle of Ischia or perhaps try to resist temptation on the isle of Capri as you walk past all the big fashion names that you will find dotted along the streets.
