Map of Day 1: UK - Rome

On arriving in Rome, we’ll arrange for a private transfer to take you to your hotel. You have three nights to spend in the Eternal City, and there’s a lot to pack in. Set out and explore the city on foot to get on Roman time. Head to the atmospheric centro storico and stop for a photo by the Spanish Steps, people-watch in the bustling Piazza Navona and toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain to ensure you’ll return to the city.

On your first evening, wander across the river into Trastevere, a vibrant medieval neighbourhood known for its exciting atmosphere and concentration of local trattorie and bars. If you’re after a classic Roman dish, a simple cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper) pasta is a favourite around here.

Pre-book an excursion to make the most of your time – we love the Vatican Museum & St Peter’s Basilica tour, which ticks off two must-see sights with a knowledgeable guide in tow. You’ll explore the world-class Vatican Museums, see Michelangelo’s masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel and jump the queue at the Basilica.

For lunch, pop into a local rosticceria for antipasti and pane (bread) and head to Villa Borghese Gardens for a spot of al fresco lunch. The park is Rome’s green lung, and is filled with treasures including one of the city’s finest art galleries.

There’s plenty to pack in today – start your day bright and early and pick a prime spot for breakfast. We love the choice of cafés by the Spanish Steps – do as the Italians do and order cappuccini e cornetti.

Next, our Archaeological Wonders of Rome tour can take you through the most important gifts from the Roman Empire in half a day. You’ll see the remains of the Roman Forum (the heart of the empire), wander through the soaring seats of the Colosseum and finish at Palatine Hill, with its spectacular views across the city.

Day 4: Rome - Sorrento

Today, it’s time to head south. Check out of your hotel and take your private transfer to Rome’s Termini Station, where you’ll catch the train to Naples (approximately one hour), and meet your private transfer to your Sorrento hotel (a further hour, give or take).

Get to know Sorrento (and soak up some sunshine) with a stroll around the picturesque Marina Grande, the town’s original harbour still thriving with fishermen. It’s the perfect spot for a sundowner with platefuls of fresh seafood to celebrate your first night in Sorrento.

Points of Interest

Sorrento is a good base for exploring some of southern Italy’s most famous sights. Save a full day for a tour of Pompeii and neighbouring Herculaneum, two of the country’s most important archaeological sites. You’ll explore the preserved ruins, forums and villas of Pompeii, dating back to 79AD when the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried the town in ash.

Next, you’ll travel to the smaller site of Herculaneum, which suffered the same fate as Pompeii. Its miraculously still-intact buildings house preserved mosaics and woodworks unlike anything else surviving today.

Day 6: Sorrento

Points of Interest

Today, you can tour the destroyer itself. Pre-book our half-day Vesuvius excursion to scale the heights of the only active volcano on mainland Europe – fortunately, most of the climb will be by air-conditioned coach, before you disembark to walk the remaining 30 minutes to the crater itself. On a clear day, the views across the Bay of Naples are spectacular.

Save this evening for O Parrucchiano, a Sorrentine establishment that’s been in the business for more than 100 years, and is credited as the birthplace of cannelloni. Try and get a table outside – seating is beneath lemon trees in the beautiful garden.

Day 7-8: Sorrento

Points of Interest

Spend a relaxed couple of days enjoying Sorrento’s unique atmosphere, starting with its main square, Piazza Tasso. The piazza is the gateway to the old town; a warren of interesting little streets, family-run restaurants and gift shops.

Sorrento is famous for its lemons, which is a good place to start souvenir shopping – there are all kinds of lemon-scented gifts and local specialities to sample. The favourite? Limoncello, a delicious lemon-flavoured liqueur that Italians enjoy as a digestif. Order a glass after a meal, buy a bottle to take home or even seek out the area’s limoncello factories – just don’t leave Sorrento without trying some.

Day 9: Sorrento - Amalfi Coast

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Map of Day 9: Sorrento - Amalfi Coast

There’s just time for a final cappuccino at your hotel before it’s time to take your private transfer to the Amalfi Coast. It’s a short but incredibly scenic drive along this famously beautiful coastline, where you can choose from a picture-perfect line-up of resorts. There’s the jaw-dropping Ravello, a candy-coloured town clinging to cliffs above the sea, or the tiny Conca dei Marini that’s remained relatively untouched by the area’s popularity. Choose Minori for the best beach proximity – it has its own stretch of sand.

Day 10: Amalfi Coast

Points of Interest

Wherever you choose to stay on the Amalfi Coast, you’ll be well-placed for a few excursions. Reserve a whole day for the impossibly glamorous island of Capri. Our excursion to Capri & Anacapri whisks you over to the island for a guided walk around its vibrant green scenery, with plenty of free time for a leisurely lunch and nose around Anacapri’s smart shopping streets and chic boutiques.

Day 11: Amalfi Coast

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Map of Day 11: Amalfi Coast

Perhaps spend some time exploring Amalfi today. This colourful town attracted a sophisticated crowd in the 1920s, and has remained a symbol of la dolce vita. It’s filled with landmarks, like its soaring cathedral and bustling Piazza Duomo (it’s worth the climb to the top for the fantastic views).

After a little sightseeing, it’s time for lunch by the water. Amalfi has a lovely harbour and beachfront area, home to a good choice of bars and restaurants with freshly netted seafood filling the menus. Save a couple of hours for the beach, too – it’s a small, sandy spot that’s big enough to throw down a towel for a few hours.

Day 12: Amalfi Coast - Puglia

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Map of Day 12: Amalfi Coast - Puglia

Today you’ll bid arrivederci to the Amalfi Coast and head west into beautiful region of Puglia. We’ll arrange a private transfer to Naples airport, where you’ll pick up your hire car and drive to the Apulian town of Ostuni, through countryside and vineyards to rival Tuscany.

Ostuni is one of Puglia’s most picturesque towns. It’s earned the nickname ‘White City’ for its collection of whitewashed buildings that form its centro storico. The town tumbles down the hillside between shady courtyards and steep, narrow streets, with plenty of authentic restaurants and a weekly Saturday market to snap up the region’s famous produce. Pick a local osteria for a home-style meal rich in local olive oil, cheese and pasta – we love the rustic interiors of Osteria del Tempo Perso.

Day 13-14: Puglia

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Map of Day 13-14: Puglia

Make the most of your hire care and explore the region’s little hilltop towns and villages. Alberobello is a must-see; nicknamed ‘Trulli Town’, it’s characterised by a sprawl of trulli houses, which are traditional stone houses with cone-shaped roofs that sprawl from the centro storico like a toy town. Totally unique to Puglia, some have even been transformed into shops and churches.

If you miss the sea, it’s well worth driving down to the coast. Puglia is home to some of Italy’s most beautiful and untouched beaches. The resort of Torre Canne di Fasano is one of our favourites, and is known for its long sweep of golden sand and waterfront eateries.

Day 15: Puglia - UK

Pack up your limoncello and Apulian olive oil – it’s time to end your adventure in southern Italy. Drop your hire car off in the port town of Bari before catching your flight back to the UK.
