After arriving in Rome and checking in to your centrally located hotel, spend the afternoon at the epic Colosseum, the largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire and travel back in time to an era of bloody battles between gladiators, slaves and wild animals. Finish the day with a meal at one of the friendly local restaurants, located close by.

Today, we recommend spending the day visiting the Vatican; home to the world's largest church and the celebrated Sistine Chapel. Pre-book The Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica excursion, and enjoy a guided tour around its fascinating museums and galleries. If you have time left over, be sure to visit the Castel Sant’Angelo for an insight into Rome’s dramatic past.

Tick off the remainder of the city’s must-see sights, starting with the renowned Spanish Steps before heading to the Trevi Fountain where you can throw a coin in for a safe return to the city one day – and on to the Pantheon, one of the largest concrete structures in the world for hundreds of years. In the evening, do as the Romans do and head for dinner in Trastavere, Rome's medieval quarter. You’ll find numerous great trattorie serving the most authentic of Italian cuisine, and maybe even a few gelaterias open until late.

Leave the 'Eternal City' behind and travel to your chosen resort on the Amalfi Coast (approx. 3-4 hours). Spend the first afternoon getting to grips with your surroundings, be it by strolling down to the beachfront, or admiring the views over the sea from a vantage point.

You have six full days to explore this famed stretch of coastline, so take it easy and make the most of the exquisite seaside atmosphere. The Amalfi Coast is famed for its charming towns, jagged cliff faces and scenic coastline; wherever you decide to stay you will discover an area rich in natural and historical beauty.
 
The town of Amalfi is at the heart of the region, offering a spectacular sandy beachfront and a magnificent duomo for you to explore. If you're looking for a touch of class, head to the incomparable town of Positano, where chic boutiques and exclusive restaurants flow down the hillside to the sea in a chaotic but pretty jumble. Alternatively, head to hilltop Ravello – an enchanting place where every street has a view, and iconic sights like the Villa Cimbrone have wowed countless famous names over the decades, including Gretta Garbo and Tennessee Williams.

 

There’s plenty more to see besides, including the old fishing town of Minori – a peaceful place often overlooking in favour of Amalfi, Maiori, where the coast’s longest beach can be found, and Conca dei Marini – home to the Emerald Grotto sea cave and undersea 'Presepe', the scene of the birth of Christ.

For those wanting to see more of this fabulous country, the pre-bookable Capri excursion is ideal, providing easy ferry access to this enchanting island, where you can enjoy a guided private minibus tour which includes a visit to Villa St. Michele museum and later the Garden of Augustus. The majority of international flights arrive into Rome Fiumicino airport (FCO), which is approximately 45 minutes from the centre of Rome. Direct flights to Fiumicino are available from Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Jersey, Leeds, London City, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, London Luton, London Stansted, Manchester and Newcastle and take approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.

Direct flights to Rome Ciampino airport (CIA), which is approximately 30 minutes from the centre of Rome, depart from London Stansted, Edinburgh, Manchester, East Midlands and Glasgow and take approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.
