Map of Day 1: UK - Lake Garda

Upon landing at Verona airport, collect your hire car, throw your bags in the back and you're off on your lake and mountain adventure. From Verona, you could pay a visit to Sigurta, where you can wander on foot or cycle sedately around the beautiful gardens before beginning your journey along the eastern shore of Lake Garda towards your destination of Riva Del Garda.

Riva itself is an historic town of narrow, winding alleys with a glorious lakeside aspect, tucked away on the northern most shore of Lake Garda and your hotel will act as your ideal base for enjoying everything the lake has to offer.

Day 2: Lake Garda

Once you've taken breakfast and got your bearings, its time to start exploring and where better to spend your first day than to drive down the eastern shore to Malcesine. Here you can stroll through the pretty streets and find time for a morning cappuccino, before buying your tickets to board the cable car for the ascent up Monte Baldo.

You can stop halfway up and enjoy the restaurant facilities and then continue your climb in the 360 degree rotating cable car, which affords wonderful views of the vista below as you make your way to the summit. From the top, you can spend time walking through the green pastures as you admire the scenery around you from your lofty vantage point.

Today, you can visit the town near to Riva and gaze upon the ancient tower in Apponale, perhaps whilst sipping on a coffee and tucking in to a little lunchtime treat next to the pretty little harbour. You'll love the multi-coloured buildings and residences that line the harbour side and it's easy to spend a very relaxing afternoon here before heading back to Riva for dinner.

After a couple of days touring, you might like to spend some time exploring more of the town which is playing host to you. Riva is a splendid lakeside town and you can find ample things to do and see right on your doorstep. But if you are in the mood for another trip, then why not take a drive down the western side of Lake Garda to the pretty, lemon tree clad hillsides of Limone.

This town, built on the rocks that reach down to the lake itself, is postcard perfect and here you might like to stroll the streets and explore the myriad passageways, stopping occasionally for some retail therapy, Italian style and a little bite to eat at lunchtime perhaps.

Time now to venture into the Dolomites and where better to start than the Tyrolean capital of Merano. Merano's collection of thermal baths are revered by all that visit the area, so why not spend your first day relaxing in one or more of the many pools that surround the town.

Take a stroll along the Passer River (a tributary of the Adige) and pass through the medieval centre. One for the botanists is the 80 individual gardens that surround the famous Trauttmansdorff Castle; these gardens showcase a variety of plant species which are found from all corners of the planet.
