Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Bari / Brindisi airport - Matera

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Map of Day 1: Bari / Brindisi airport - Matera

After touching down in Puglia, you’ll collect your hire car and drive across the border to the neighbouring region of Basilicata. You’ll spend the night in the hilltop town of Matera – walk down to one of the viewing terraces at sunset for beautiful views over the town’s famous cave houses. Stay in either the Hotel Locanda di San Martino (or similar) or the Masseria Fortificata San Francesco (or similar).

Day 2: Matera - Altamura - Gravina - Matera

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

After breakfast and a morning cappuccino, head to nearby Altamura. As the city is famous for its traditional bread, we will arrange a tasting experience in a local bakery for you. After seeing the sights (don’t miss the stunning cathedral), move on to Gravina in Puglia – like Matera, its houses are carved into a rocky hillside. Spend the afternoon back in Matera; if you like walking, follow one of the trails in the surrounding national park.

Day 3: Matera - Taranto - Gallipoli - Salento

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Today, drive via Taranto to the historic coastal town of Gallipoli. Explore the town, then make for a local winery for a tasting of three local wines and a light lunch. Stay in either the Hotel Monte Callini (or similar) or the Masseria Solicara Resort (or similar).

Day 4: Salento - Otranto - S.Maria Di Leuca - Salento

Don’t forget your camera – as well as visiting the beautiful whitewashed town of Otranto (which borders a turquoise lagoon), you’ll enjoy a scenic drive along the coastline and a catamaran trip to Leuca’s sea caves.

Day 5: Salento - Lecce - Martina Franca - Alberobello - Ostuni area

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Map of Day 5: Salento - Lecce - Martina Franca - Alberobello - Ostuni area

You’ll be off to the Valle d’Itria today, home to some of Puglia’s most famous towns. Pit-stop in Lecce to admire its Roman theatre and grand cathedral, spend an hour exploring the baroque town of Martina Franca, then arrive in Alberobello, home of Puglia’s distinctive trulli houses. We will then arrange a tasting of local wines, cheeses, cold cuts and bread in an enoteca for you. Stay in either the Hotel Tenuta Monacelle (or similar) or the Masseria Baroni Nuovi (or similar).

Day 6: Ostuni area - Bari - Trani - Ostuni area

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

We recommend driving north to Bari this morning. Tour the Castel del Monte, amble through the atmospheric old quarter, and look out for the ‘orecchiette ladies’, who sit outside their houses hand-making these traditional Apulian pasta shapes. Afterwards, journey to Trani for dinner beside its charming marina.

Day 7: Ostuni area - Polignano a Mare - Ostuni - Ostuni area

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

In the morning, pay a visit to the Castellana Caves, before heading to the seaside town of Polignano a Mare, known for its delicious ice-cream (included in your visit is a tasting experience in a traditional ice-cream parlour). In the afternoon, you could explore the whitewashed city of Ostuni, or head to a rural olive oil farm for a complimentary tour and tasting.
