Pretty boats bob gently in front of ancient harbour walls, and time-worn streets thrum with holiday energy in Alghero – Northern Sardinia’s heritage resort. The town has been inhabited for more than five millennia, leading to a fascinating line-up of historical attractions scattered through one of the finest centro storicos (historic centres) on the island. The foremost attraction is the impressive Cattedrale di Santa Maria – a grand 16th-century cathedral with a marble interior and a soaring bell tower that provides stunning views for those brave enough to climb. There are plenty of other things to see and do too, including visiting one of the several hundred restaurants and bars hidden in Alghero’s streets.

The town also boasts some spectacular beaches nearby including the sandy expanse of Spiaggia Mugoni, plus the remarkable Neptune’s Grotto offers an enchanting day out involving a thrilling 600-step descent in order to witness miraculous stalactite formations.
