Day 1: Merano

Map of Day 1: Merano

The Tyrolean town of Merano is nestled at the foot of the Dolomites Mountains. Once you’re all checked in to your hotel, spend a few hours exploring. Stroll around the charming arcades, follow the promenade to the stunning Trauttmansdorff Castle, or enjoy a soak in the mountain-view thermal baths ahead of the week’s walking.

Day 2: Merano - Nals

You’ll have around 5-6 hours of walking today. It’s a fairly easy start, heading along the ‘Waal’ paths through apple plantations and past an impressive waterfall, before the trail meanders up through the hills to Tisens (a village famous for its delicious chestnuts) and the quaint hillside church of St. Christoph. Continue on through beautiful woodland, taking in the fantastic views of the Etsch Valley, before descending to the idyllic village of Nals, surrounded by apple orchards and vineyards.

Details: approx. 18 km, +550 m / -550 m

Day 3: Nals - Kaltern

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Map of Day 3: Nals - Kaltern

Today, you’ll be following the ‘trail of the castles’, hiking between hillside fortresses as you journey south towards Lake Kaltern. This afternoon, you will wander through the region of ‘holes in the ice’. This is a bit of a natural phenomenon as it’s probably one of the only places you can see icicles in midsummer. Other highlights you will come across on this path is the tower of St. George as well as gorgeous vineyards. Every step you walk today will be made worthwhile on viewing the end destination, Lake Kaltern which is beautifully green.

Details: approx. 18 km, +700 m / -600 m

Day 4: Kaltern/Kalterer Lake - Coredo

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

You will head off this morning to Mendelpass (saddle of Mendel) by train. The train sets the scene for the spectacular scenery you can expect today. This morning’s walk is a comfortable one, over the plateau towards Nonstal (a valley known for its delicious apples). Weave your way through impressive canyons and idyllic villages, and pass glistening lakes. Finally you will reach peaceful Coredo, whose only neighbours are the surrounding fields.

Details: approx. 16 km, +200 m / -700 m

Day 5: Coredo - Molveno

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

A short transfer this morning will take you to the ‘Way of St. James’, high up in the Paganella mountain. Stroll the path here, where you will reach the famous triple-arched bridge in Cavedago. Continue on to the village of Molveno, which is located at the foot of the Brenta-Dolomites. The mountain lake here is the perfect photo opportunity.

Details: approx. 15 km, +530 m / -100 m

Day 6: Molveno - Comano Terme

This morning you will take the cable car up into the mountain area of Pradel. If you thought you had seen some beautiful hiking routes on your travels so far, you haven’t seen what is waiting for you at the top of the mountain. Make a stop at a Rifugio (mountain cabin) and tuck into an Italian snack. The views of the mountain tops from the cabin are pretty impressive, too. Then it’s back down the mountain. Your cable car will take you to the banks of Lake Molveno, where you will journey on to Lago Nembia. Hop on a bus to Comano Terme, relax and enjoy the woodland scenery from the comfort of your bus seat.

Details: approx. 15 km, +500 m / -400 m

Day 7: Comano Terme - Riva del Garda

Please call one of our Italy experts to discuss your accommodation choices

Map of Day 7: Comano Terme - Riva del Garda

Last but not least, today you will walk through the untouched meadows of the valley of Lomason. Things get a little hilly after that as you climb up Rifugio Monte San Pietro. Trust us, the view of Lake Garda from the top makes it worth it. Make your way back down the mountain, weaving through winding streets, archways, passing stonewalls and ending up at Castle of Tenno, standing tall over the lake.

Just the last few kilometres of this itinerary will take you through olive groves and Mediterranean cypress vegetation. You have made it to the banks of Lake Garda and we are betting it is a fantastic sight. This evening, find yourself a lake-side restaurant, and enjoy a well-earned glass of Prosecco.

Details: approx. 10 km, +200 m / -700 m
