  • Visit the stunning city of Mantua, a former Italian capital of culture
  • Discover elegant palaces and medieval and Renaissance buildings
  • Stroll down Parco Sigurta’s famous Avenue of the Roses

Just to the south of Lake Garda is the age-old city of Mantua (Mantova in Italian). Sitting pretty in the region of Lombardy, Mantua was once the seat of the House of Gonzaga, and today showcases a medley of Renaissance and medieval buildings. Mantua is often overlooked in favour of nearby Venice and Verona, so this excursion is a great way to discover this lesser-known gem, recently awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO.

In the afternoon, you’ll move on to Parco Giardino Sigurta, also known as the ‘Temple of Nature’ due to the sheer variety and number of plants. Touted as one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, the seasonal flowers, ornamental ponds, lakes and lawns are spread across 560,000 square metres. Highlights here include a giant sun dial, serene water gardens and the ‘Avenue of the Roses’, where more than 30,000 flowers bloom come springtime.

“These are two of Italy’s hidden treasures. Visitors often miss them in favour of the better-known cities and more popular gardens around the Lakes, but they’re both spectacular.” Laura Mason, Product Manager
