Arrive at Milan Malpensa Airport and transfer to the stunning Lake Como, surrounded by soaring mountains (approx. 1 hours 30 minutes). After checking in to your hotel, we recommend heading to the nearest stretch of lakefront to get to grips with the impressive scale and jaw-dropping beauty of Italy’s deepest lake. Finish your first day with a meal by the lakeside as the sun sets.

Map of Day 2: Lake Como

Lake Como is Italy’s third largest lake and offers so many sights and sounds it would take weeks to see them all. We recommend purchasing a central lake ticket from one of the kiosks near the ferry ports, which allows you to explore the lakeside towns at will, using the convenient water taxi service. Tailor the cruise to coincide with where you are staying; sip an espresso in Menaggio's 19th-century Piazza Garibaldi; pick up a souvenir in one of Varenna's cosy artisan shops or enjoy a delicious gelato in Lenno. Ensure you include a visit to Bellagio, famous for its location on the promontory where the lake separates into two branches.

Today we suggest experiencing the manicured grandeur of Villa Balbianello on a pre-bookable excursion. Start by setting sail on a private boat and head across to the spectacular 18th-century villa – featured most recently in the James Bond film 'Casino Royale'. Afterwards, spend time strolling along the promenade of nearby Menaggio, one of the lake’s prettiest locations.

Spend today enjoying the rural splendours of Lake Como. The area around the lake boasts the perfect setting for hiking and walking, with the 'Green Way' offering 10.5 kilometres of safe and scenic trekking along the lakefront and between Colonno and Cadenabbia de Griante. Bring a picnic – either prepared by your hotel or collected in person from the local town shops, and soak up the peace and serenity of this spectacular destination. If you have time left over, be sure to try an aperitivo at one of the lakefront cafes, found in many larger resorts.

Milan's gothic duomo is the city’s greatest attraction, and fortunately opens early, so head to the city's main piazza, climb the steps to the rooftop of the largest gothic cathedral in the world, and admire the stunning panoramic views over the city. Just across the piazza is the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II; marvel at the grand high-glass domed ceilings and beautiful floor mosaics, window-shop in the designer fashion houses before reaching the Teatro Alla Scala at the other side of the mall. For more than 200 years the theatre has been the venue for some of Italy's greatest operatic masterpieces and is home to a theatrical museum and library.

Pre-booking our "La Scala Museum and Theatre" excursion gives you the chance to learn interesting facts about the theatre from your knowledgeable guide. For a elegant end to your day book tickets to a performance or opera with one of our Italy Experts.
