Postcard-worthy vistas are ten-a-penny around Lake Como. Strolls along lakefront promenades reveal wide-open views across the water to the mountains beyond, while boat trips give you great outlooks onto the lake’s colourful towns and villages.

Walk the 10-kilometre Greenway path for lake views and stops in pretty villages, or take the funicular from Como up to hillside Brunate for elevated views across the water. Our Fabulous Villas of Lake Como cruise is a great way to explore the lake, taking you past a number of the lake’s palatial waterside villas. If you’re interested in mountain scenery, the Bernina Express will whisk you up into the Alps past crystal-clear lakes and glaciers on its way to Switzerland.

Day 4: Lake Como - Liguria

Points of Interest

Map of Days 5 & 6: Liguria

Liguria’s coast is one of Italy’s most picturesque, thanks to its cute coves and brightly coloured houses. Set aside a full day for exploring the Cinque Terre, the region’s most photogenic area. This national park is made up of five cliff-side villages, each filled with houses painted in pinks, reds, oranges and yellows. For the best views of the villages, hike between them or take the ferry. The view of Vernazza as you walk along the Blue Path from Monterosso is particularly lovely, as is the view of Manarola if you follow the footpath north from the little harbour.

Portofino’s glamorous harbour is another picture-perfect scene – our concierge, Danilo, recommends taking the path to Castello Brown and stopping half-way for the best views of it. In nearby Rapallo, meanwhile, you could take the funicular to the top of Montallegro for standout views of the Bays of Rapallo, Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure.

Day 7: Liguria - Tuscany

From Liguria, drive south to Tuscany’s capital, where we recommend basing yourself for the next few nights.

Days 8 - 10: Florence & Tuscany

Map of Days 8 - 10: Florence & Tuscany

Three full days will give you plenty of time to explore Florence and the Tuscan countryside. Get your bearings with our Grand Panoramic Tour; a scenic drive out to the lovely town of Fiesole, set in the hills overlooking Florence. In the city itself, make sure you scale the cathedral’s dome or campanile for fantastic views over the rooftops.

Our Best Places in Tuscany excursion takes you to through the landscape of vineyards and rolling hills to the beautiful cities of Siena and Pisa and the hilltop town of San Gimignano. A traditional lunch, wine tasting and al fresco dinner make it a perfect introduction to Tuscany. If you prefer to drive yourself, Danilo recommends avoiding the main road between Florence and Siena, and instead taking the winding SR222 – it passes through some spectacular scenery, as well as lovely villages like Greve in Chianti, Radda in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti.

Day 11: Florence - Amalfi Coast

From Florence, you’ll take the train to Naples and then transfer to your hotel on the Amalfi Coast.

Map of Days 12 - 14: Amalfi Coast

With its pastel-painted towns and dramatic cliffs, this is one of Italy’s most stunning coastlines. The coastal roads offer up views at every twist and turn – going from east to west, make sure you’re sitting on the right side of the coach or car; going west to east, get a seat on the left.

The most photo-worthy town has to be Positano. Its pastel-hued houses climb up the cliff-side, connected by steep staircases and winding lanes – work your way up to the top of the town for spectacular views (or if you’d rather save your energy, the view from the beach looking up is just as incredible). Positano is best appreciated from the water, though, so opt for our Cruise to Positano to combine your visit with a scenic journey along the coast.

Ravello is another stunning spot, nestled high in the hills above Amalfi. The coastal views are famous, but don’t miss out on the inland views, either. From the Piazza Centrale you can look across the valley to lush green terraces and the little village of Scala. And don’t miss the pretty isle of Capri – our Capri & Anacapri excursion will take you to the island’s best bits, including the Gardens of Caesar Augustus and the Villa San Michele.
