Castelvecchio By The River Adige

Located on the banks of the Adige River, the Castelvecchio or 'old castle' was built in 1354 by Cangrande Il della Scala and is a prominent example of gothic architecture. Constructed in red brick with seven towers and a fortified bridge, the design provided an escape route in the event of attack. In later years, the castle was used as barracks by Napoleon, and later under Austrian rule.

Whilst the bridge was reconstructed in 1949 following damage caused by French troops in the 18th century, and subsequently World War 2 in 1945, restoration to the main structure took place in 1957 when creating the museum which today has 29 rooms full of paintings, sculptures and weapons.
