Bolzano is the capital city of South Tyrol, and is at the heart of the region's two cultures, Italian and German. The Alpine architecture and breathtaking scenery may seem more Germanic than Italian – especially when draped in snow – but Bolzano’s culture and energy is very much indicative of its Italian roots.
The historic heart of the town is set across a mountain-fed river, and is a maze of medieval streets packed with shops and restaurants, fortified castles and sacred churches. The cuisine here varies by restaurant, with German options like Speck ham being just as popular as Italian pasta and pizza.
From Bolzano, you can easily immerse yourself in the pristine landscape, with walking trails and bike tours leading right from the city centre, making it easy to get out and about in the verdant surroundings. For those wanting to travel a little further afield, Trauttmansdorff Castle in historic Merano can be reached in just half an hour.
