Villa San Michele is one of the island’s best-kept secrets; a spectacularly airy villa set at the top of Anacapri’s Phoenician Steps. Yet it is the story behind this glorious abode that makes it so special. It was owned by author and physician Axel Munthe – the man behind the best-selling book ‘The Story of San Michele’. When he moved to Capri in the late 19th century he wanted a house ‘like a Greek temple’: filled with light and open to the elements. His vision was certainly achieved – the house is stunningly light, and offers breathtaking panoramas over the ocean.

The house was gradually adorned with exotic artworks and monuments, gathered from many travel and even more well-travelled friends. Munthe’s art collection is still on display numbering some 600 pieces, placed around the vast villa with meticulous care. Of these, the antique sphinx looking out to see is perhaps the most impressively positioned. Surrounded by lush gardens and robed in breathtaking views, this is an unforgettable place and well worth a visit into Anacapri to reach it.

Opening hours: Open year round, from 9.00am – 3.30pm from November to February, from 9am – 4.30pm in March, from 9am – 5pm in April and October, and from 9am – 6pm from May to September.

Prices: €7 per person.
