Day 1: UK - Calabria

Map of Day 1: UK - Calabria

Fly into Lamezia Airport and pick up your hire car for the short hour’s drive to Tropea. You'll likely speed through inner Calabria, among its citrus groves and olive trees, with the distant backdrop of its mountainous national parks.

Once you've arrived at the coast, join the locals for an evening passeggiata along Corso Vittorio Emanuele to get on Tropean time, and pick a restaurant or trattoria for dinner in the old town. To try some local specialties, pick a dish with nduja (spicy sausage), or cipolle, Tropea's famously sweet red onions.

Points of Interest

Spend the first part of your trip enjoying the delights of Calabria. In Tropea, wander up to the clifftop Santa Maria dell’Isola monastery, then head down to the sand for an afternoon on the pretty beach. Further afield, discover the wild landscapes and beautiful beaches of Capo Vaticano or take a boat trip across to the volcanic Aeolian Islands.

Day 6: Calabria - Basilicata

Say arrivederci to Calabria as you drive the four hours to Matera, in the east of Basilicata. It's the longest leg of your journey, but it's also the most scenic; the landscapes in this region are breathtaking, as Calabria's dramatic coast and soaring mountains smooth out into the rolling green hills of Basilicata, interspersed with patchworks of farmlands, thick olive trees and a smattering of old caves hint at what's to come...

Day 7-8: Basilicata

Points of Interest

Map of Day 7-8: Basilicata

As you arrive in Basilicata, you'll pass a number of historic hilltop towns and villages, most of which are off the tourist trail and incredibly unspoilt. You're headed to Matera, one of Italy’s most unusual towns, thanks to its UNESCO-listed cave dwellings. It's easy to spend a couple of days exploring these cave houses ("sassi") – where museums, churches and even bars are carved out of the rocky hillside.

If you're an active type, Matera's valleys and hills are a prime spot for hiking and cycling, where you can explore the oldest of its cave - some of which are believed to be prehistoric.

Day 9: Basilicata - UK

Today, you'll depart Matera and watch the scenery rolling past flatten out, as you cross the border into Puglia, known for its flat, burnt orange landscapes punctuated with millennial olive trees. Drop your hire car at Bari Airport before catching your flight back to the UK.
