Map of Days 5-7: Puglia

Puglia's landscape is second to none, characterised by rugged hills interspersed by whitewashed buildings and crystal-clear waters lapping against the sun-scorched coastline. It’s perfect for driving, and is packed with spectacular destinations ripe for exploration.

The quaint town of Alberobello is top of most people’s wish lists. The town is has one of the most incredible skylines of any in Italy, peppered with spiky conical turrets that form the roofs of trulli houses. These are characterised by their conical roofs and were originally constructed as temporary shelters and storehouses or permanent dwellings for agricultural labourers, many have since been converted into shops, restaurants or serve as holiday homes. Nearby are the breathtaking Grottos of Castellana, which are well worth a visit if you are in the area. Take a guided tour around the two kilometre network of caves and admire the precious crystals, shimmering rock pools and majestic stalagmites and stalactites.

Another top sight is the gleaming hill town of Ostuni – Puglia’s 'white city'. Packed with picturesque white-washed houses and historic monuments, this is one of the most atmospheric destinations within the region, offers a thriving mix of authentic restaurants and dramatic vistas. Last up is Lecce – another prime option that’s well worth your time. Lecce is to Baroque what Florence is to Renaissance and boasts a beautiful walled historical centre which is truly a monument in itself, packed with picturesque lanes bursting with chalky white churches and cherub statues.
