Positano

Italy's most spectacular stretch of coastline with steep-stepped Positano, clinging to tall cliffs; Amalfi with its whitewashed villas, fisherman's dwellings, merchant town houses and luxury hotels that overlook sapphire coloured seas; and beautiful Ravello, whose lofty setting commands inspirational views.

POSITANO

A narrow ribbon of shimmering asphalt running over ravines and translucent sea, links Sorrento to the beauty of Positano, a vibrant village clambering down past narrow buildings and sleepy lanes. Shaded by the church of Santa Maria Assunta and its famous 13th century Black Madonna, meander down these lanes to the waterfront where a profusion of cafés, bars and restaurants serve freshly landed seafood. The hills above Positano are strewn with paths, making up the Trail of the Gods, which zigzags through lush vegetation leading walkers to the delightful hamlet of Nocelle.

PRAIANO

Set amongst the inlets of the breathtaking Amalfi Coast, just 4 miles (6,5km) from Amalfi and 5 miles (8km) from Positano is the ancient fishing village of Praiano. This delightful seaside resort presents itself to the seas as a cascade of white houses on a green flowering slope surrounded by sandy coves.

My favourite town on the Amalfi Coast has to be Positano. I love to walk down the steps of the town browsing the shops, then all the way to the pebbled beach to watch the boats and take in the view of Positano from here. But when I really want to treat myself, I head in the opposite direction and drive up to Montepertuso, set high up above Positano, for an amazing lunch in the Trattoria 'La Tagliata'. You really will find yourself in paradise sat overlooking Positano with a choice of home-grown vegetables and antipasti as a starter, followed by pasta, local grilled meats and cake. All washed down with local wine and limoncello of course! If you don?t have a car and are staying in Positano, you can call to reserve a table and free pick-up service from your hotel to get to the La Tagliata.

Pompeii & Vesuvius

Destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD, Pompeii lay buried below lava and ash for hundreds of years before it was discovered, perfectly preserved, in 1784. The history of this ancient Roman town, as brought to life by our professional guide, is fascinating as you walk in the footsteps of the Pompeians. There is also a chance to visit the destroyer itself, the only active volcano on mainland Europe; you can even walk up to the edge of the crater. An unforgettable experience. Don't forget your camera!

Compulsory entrance fees: Pompeii 11 euros. Vesuvius 10 euros.

Operates: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (subject to minimum numbers)
Departure: Approx. 7.20am

Herculaneum & Sorrento

Herculaneum was the second city to be destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD. It is said that Herculaneum is better preserved than Pompeii, as it was sealed by lava whereas Pompeii was buried mainly in ash. You will find excellent examples of Roman richness in the unspoiled mosaic tiled floors and frescoed villas, no longer seen in Pompeii. The local guide will animate the story of this wealthy, ancient Roman summer resort.

Combine Herculaneum with the small town of Sorrento. Wonderfully located over white cliffs Sorrento offers a fantastic view over the Bay of Naples. For years visitors from all over the world have been attracted to Sorrento, think breathtaking sunsets, fragrances of orange and lemon gardens. Take time to explore the old cobbled streets and maybe try the local tipple of Limoncello!

Compulsory entrance fees: Herculaneum 11 euros.

Departure: Approx. 7.20am
Duration: Full Day

Our guide will accompany you to the towns of Capri and Anacapri for a guided walk-around, showing you the Gardens of Caesar Augustus with spectacular views over the Faraglioni Rocks and, off the beaten tourist track, the Villa San Michele. There's enough time for a wander at your leisure through the exclusive shopping lanes packed with designer labels, or a breathtaking ride on the chairlift before the homeward journey.

Optional extras/entrance fees (approx.): Caesar Augustus gardens 1 euro. Blue Grotto 23 euros. Boat trip 15 euros. Villa San Michele 6 euros. Chairlift 10 euros.

Operates: Wednesday and Sunday (subject to minimum numbers)

Paestum

The town of Paestum was founded by the Greeks around 60 B.C. Its name deriving from Poseidon (the god of the sea) to whom it was dedicated. It was during this period that the Temple of Poseidon and the Temple of Ceres were built.

Today the Temples and ruins are considered to be the finest of their kind. The nearby museum not only contains many fine sculptures which were excavated from the site but also the tomb paintings, one of which is the so-called "Tomb of the Diver", a graceful and expressively naturalistic piece of work, the only existing example of Greek wall painting left in Italy.

Compulsory entrance fees: Paestum Temples 10 euros. Museum 10 euros.

Operates: Tuesday (subject to minimum numbers)
Departure: Approx. 7.20am
Duration: Full Day
