When staying on Lake Orta, it is well worth a visit to Sacro Monte (known as the Holy Hill), this nature reserve is located in a wonderful panoramic position above the village of Orta San Giulio. It consists of twenty 16th and 18th century chapels decorated with frescoes and life-size terracotta statues that tell the story of St. Francis of Assisi's life. The entrance is free and the site can be accessed from the centre of the village, where the route is signposted.
