Once a small fishing village, Garda is now a colourful holiday resort favoured by Italian holidaymakers and opera fans due to its proximity to Verona, as well as being greatly appreciated by wine connoisseurs who make frequent trips to the neighbouring vineyards in Bardolino. The historic town boasts medieval buildings, sophisticated cafés and a tree-lined promenade that continues along the water's edge for over a mile. The cobbled streets house a range of shops and a market takes place every Friday. Garda also has good ferry connections with other towns on the lake and Bardolino is just three kilometres away.

Located on the south shores of Lake Garda, Bardolino is a picturesque town with a pedestrianised centre where you'll find plenty of bars, restaurants and smart shops. The town is probably best known for the high quality wine that comes from the vineyards on the surrounding hills and visitors to Bardolino can enjoy delicious locally-produced cuisine in one of its many lakefront restaurants.

The most important event in Bardolino's calendar, the Festa dell'Uva e del Vino (Bardolino's Wine Festival) is held in early October and draws visitors from around the world. This normally subdued town comes to life with food and wine stands, live music and an impressive fireworks display to end the celebrations.

Located on the west banks of Lake Garda, Gardone is an elegant resort with a peaceful piazza that slopes down to the lakeshore and a leafy lakeside promenade that's lined with intellectual cafés and artistic trattoria. The town offers a gracious charm of a bygone era and a short walk uphill from the lakeshore will take you to its historic centre and the eccentric Il Vittoriale, a complex of squares, gardens and water features with some lovely views over the lake. Nearby, the botanic Heller Gardens are also a big draw for visitors. Established between 1910 and 1971 by Arthur Hruska, they showcase exotic plants and works of modern art are dotted between the greenery and fountains.  For those wanting to explore, a regular ferry service will take you to Lake Garda's eastern towns and it's also possible to visit other western resorts by bus.

Two beach areas can be found about ten minutes from the resort centre and the area surrounding Peschiera is well known for the excellent wine it produces, which can be enjoyed in many of the town's restaurants. However, the lake also enjoys a mild climate in spring and autumn with temperatures rarely going beneath 20 degrees which makes it perfect for visiting at the beginning or end of season too. May, June and September are ideal months to visit for those wanting to avoid the busiest crowds and still enjoy warm weather.

Lake Garda is one of the most beautiful places I've visited and, as Italy's largest lake, there's plenty to do here for everyone. Getting between the towns on the lakes is relatively easy with ferry and bus connections; I love spending time exploring the medieval towns, sipping coffee in Malcesine while looking over the castle or shopping in the boutiques of Sirmione. The North and the South of Lake Garda are very different. The South is quite flat and it's lovely to cycle along the lakefront to the little villages along the shore, whilst the North is far more scenic with the dramatic Dolomite Mountains framing the lake's waters.
