Milan is Italy's thriving capital of commerce and fashion, the perfect blend of architectural heritage and sophisticated lifestyle and is a byword for modern Italian style. This is reflected throughout the vibrant, cosmopolitan centre, with its elegant fashion houses and lively nightlife. Milan is dominated by its magnificent Gothic cathedral, the Duomo, and its surrounding piazza is one of Europe's liveliest. From here it's just a short walk via the cafés, restaurants and smart boutiques of Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele II to the Teatro alla Scala, the 18th century high temple of opera. Although predominantly modern, the city's centro storico provides a network of narrow streets to explore and a visit to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie to see Leonardo da Vinci's famous fresco The Last Supper is a must.
