My name is Gianni and I’m the concierge for Venice.
The first time I went to Venice, I found it had a totally different style of living. It’s only when you start actually living in a place that you realise its “uniqueness”. Now, I do what Venetians usually do: forget about the rest of the world! I can go for months without seeing a car, without worrying about a car park, without worrying about crossing a street.

In Venice, you have to get into the slow motion of everyday life. We all come from modern cities with stressful lives, but in Venice, you have to slow down. That’s the main thing I would recommend to enjoy Venice – sit in a little square and just listen to the silence, which we don’t do in any other place. Venice is a way of life that has one foot in the present, and one foot in the past.
Venice is not only the city itself. Venice is actually a lagoon, and a group of islands. It’s worth exploring the other little islands; because they are less known, you get a flavour of what Venice used to be before tourism. For example, visit Giudecca or Sant’Erasmo – they are very similar to Venice, but much smaller. You might end up there with very few other tourists, in a local place surrounded by Italians. Just get a boat – half an hour and you are in the islands.
